End State Involvement in Marriage to Save the West
Historically, marriage was a sacred bond between a man, a woman, and God, often officiated by the church. In those times, belief in marriage and commitment took precedence over economic factors. Today, however, the state controls marriage, including the division of assets in case of divorce, often with the force of law behind it. This shift reflects an unsettling reality: In the West, economic considerations now outweigh love, commitment, and the sanctity of marriage.
This is a profound and dangerous change, one that spells disaster for the West if it is not addressed immediately.
The family is the foundational unit of a nation. When families are fractured, so too are children, communities, cities, and ultimately entire states. A broken society is vulnerable—its people demoralized and confused—making it easier to invade. A fallen West will lead to the end of Pax Americana, resulting in global instability, war, and a return to barbarism. History has shown that such societal collapse brings with it unimaginable horrors, including starvation, cannibalism, and the widespread human abuse, and state-sanctioned mass murder as seen in the aftermath of the establishment of Soviet and communist regimes.
The disintegration of marriage has been a long-term process, accelerated over the past century. Divorce rates now exceed 60% in many developed nations, and the birth rate has dropped to near 1, well below the replacement rate of 2. The erosion of family structures leads to broken children, rising crime rates, and a generation of young people raised in environments devoid of stability. Additionally, the revolving door of step-parents with little to no incentive to care for children not their own often results in abuse. When parents prioritize personal "happiness" over the well-being of their children, behaviors like promiscuity become normalized, further contributing to the erosion of the family unit.
Economic realities drive many of these decisions. Under the influence of Marxist ideas, the state has become the primary supporter of women in many Western countries. With guaranteed welfare, the likelihood of securing primary custody of children, and the ability to claim half of a man's assets in a divorce, the state has effectively sided with women against men. The state should not side with anyone. Additionally, the introduction of "no-fault divorce" means that a woman can cheat and still claim up to half of a man’s assets.
This creates a significant power imbalance that discourages men, particularly those with financial means, from entering marriage without the protection of a prenuptial agreement. The involvement of the state in marriage has made the institution unrecognizable.
Moreover, state involvement in marriage implies that the woman is, in essence, married to the state, while the man—often the primary breadwinner—has little control over his own property. This inversion of traditional roles is a key factor in the collapse of the family structure in the West.
What Can Be Done?
The state should play no role in the sanctity of marriage beyond mediating private contracts. Marriages must be private agreements, with stipulations for handling situations such as adultery and asset division in case of separation. Over time, the most robust contracts—those that prioritize the stability of the family—will likely become the most popular, potentially even aligning with religious or scriptural principles.
For Christian couples, marriage is a sacred union, a commitment that, once made, is not to be broken. The challenges faced within marriage, when met with resilience, often lead to stronger bonds. In biblical tradition, adultery was punishable by death, underscoring the seriousness of marital fidelity. Restoring such values—through private agreements that uphold the sanctity of marriage—could help rebuild the fractured foundation of Western society.
